Mary Margaret McEachern

Mary Margaret McEachern, Wilmington native, retired attorney, and former assistant manager of Cape Fear Flying Club, began flying in 2019 after receiving a discovery flight from her husband. After earning her private pilot certificate in spring 2020, she joined Cape Fear Flying Club and began instrument training. She and her husband purchased a 1980 Mooney M20J, in which she has since accumulated more than 800 of her approximate 1200 flight hours.

After attaining her instrument rating, Mary Margaret earned her advanced and instrument ground instructor certificates, commercial pilot certificate, flight instructor certificate, and flight instructor-instrument certificate. She has received specialized training in upset recovery and aerobatics and is currently pursuing a tailwheel endorsement. Her future goals include instruction in upset recovery techniques.

Mary Margaret has years of experience working with ground clients in both one-on-one and classroom settings. She currently serves as volunteer ground instructor for the Civil Air Patrol’s “Learn to Fly” program, the EAA Young Eagles program, and the Mount Calvary Center for Leadership Development’s aviation programs. Her additional volunteer pursuits include the EAA Young Eagles Pilot program, and Pilots-n-Paws animal rescue. She serves as current Secretary of the ILM Aerospace Foundation and has been integrally involved with ILM’s semi-annual General Aviation Day events since their inception.

Mary Margaret enjoys providing both primary and advanced training, as well as flight reviews, airplane checkouts, and instrument proficiency checks for Club members.

In addition to teaching, Mary Margaret enjoys writing about aviation, having published articles in Plane & Pilot Magazine, Aviation Safety Magazine, Mooney Flyer Monthly, EAA Chapter 297 Newsletter, KILM Pilots Newsletter, and Wrightsville Beach Magazine.

Mary Margaret’s short-term goals include providing continuing education for Club members. Long-term goals include writing and publishing on a larger scale about a variety of aviation-related subjects.
